South Australia Becomes Ground Zero for Bird Flu Outbreak as Experts Warn of Inland Spread
South Australia has emerged as the unexpected epicentre of the highly infectious H5 bird flu strain in Australia, raising alarm bells for native wildlife. As biosecurity measures tighten, environmental scientists warn the virus could soon travel inland via local waterways.
South Australia has emerged as the frontline in the nation’s battle against the devastating H5 bird flu strain, bearing the brunt of the virus's arrival on Australian shores. To date, the state accounts for more than three-quarters of the country's confirmed cases—a statistic that does not even include a tragic mass mortality event involving approximately 80 birds near Cape Jaffa in late July.
State Chief Veterinary Officer Dr. Skye Fruean described the situation as a matter of unfortunate geography, noting that South Australia was simply unlucky to be the initial entry point for the virus into local resident bird populations.
Biosecurity Measures Tighten Across the Nation
In response to the growing threat, agricultural and event authorities across Australia are rapidly escalating biosecurity protocols. The Royal Adelaide Show has already confirmed the cancellation of all bird competitions for its upcoming September event. Meanwhile, neighbouring Victoria has instituted strict lockdowns on poultry flocks to prevent the virus from breaching commercial farms.
Despite these containment efforts, biosecurity experts warn that the outbreak is unlikely to remain confined to coastal areas, with significant risks of the virus penetrating deep into the Australian interior.
A Global Threat Reaches Our Shores
The highly infectious H5N1 variant has been on the radar of global health authorities since it was first detected in Chinese geese in 1996. Over nearly three decades, it has systematically spread to every continent on Earth, including Antarctica. Historically, international management of the disease has relied on strict physical barriers to prevent wild birds from mingling with domestic poultry or contaminating shared water sources. When a spillover event occurs, authorities are often left with no choice but to cull entire flocks to prevent further transmission.
While South Australia has fortunately avoided deadly spillovers into domestic commercial poultry so far, the virus is following a worrying ecological path similar to outbreaks observed overseas.
The Risk of Inland Spread via Waterways
While initial detections have been concentrated along South Australia's coastlines—including the South-East region and Kangaroo Island—a recent positive case in Monarto, located 20 kilometres inland, suggests the virus is moving. The majority of local cases have affected greater crested terns, though silver gulls and migratory giant petrels have also tested positive.
Chris Purnell, manager of wetland and migratory shorebirds at Birdlife Australia, warned that wild ducks could act as the primary vector for inland transmission. "Ducks are going to be one of the major vectors because of their ability to stay alive and carry the disease further inland," Purnell explained. He noted that the virus survives longer in fresh water, where ducks feed, defecate, and interact with other species, creating a hotbed for transmission.
Fears for Unique Native Wildlife and Agriculture
While the risk of human transmission remains extremely low—with fewer than 1,000 cases documented globally over thirty years, mostly among agricultural workers with intense exposure—the threat to wildlife is severe. In South America, H5N1 has decimated marine mammal populations, killing thousands of sea lions and elephant seals since 2022. Australia's first detection of this specific strain occurred in elephant seals on the remote Heard Island last year.
Adelaide University wildlife veterinarian Dr. Wayne Boardman expressed deep concern for Australia's native carnivores and scavengers, such as wedge-tailed eagles, white-bellied sea eagles, quolls, and Tasmanian devils, whose susceptibility to the virus remains largely unknown.
"I think the Australian population will be utterly devastated if this gets into iconic endangered species like the glossy black cockatoo, the plains wanderer, or the orange-bellied parrot," Dr. Boardman said.
There are also lingering concerns for the livestock sector. In the United States, a similar H5N1 clade has infected dairy cattle herds. While experts believe the risk to Australian cattle is low, it cannot be entirely ruled out if free-ranging livestock come into close contact with infected wild birds.
What Communities Can Do to Help
Faced with an unpredictable ecological threat, experts stress that human behavior can still play a vital role in mitigating the spread. Birdlife Australia advises the public to strictly avoid disturbing wild bird populations. Minimizing human interference reduces stress and cortisol levels in wild birds, keeping their immune systems stronger and reducing the volume of the virus they shed into the environment.
