Port Lincoln Murder Case Moves to Supreme Court

A former reality television contestant accused of the gruesome murder and dismemberment of her partner has entered a plea of not guilty in the Adelaide Magistrates Court, with her legal team signaling a potential mental impairment defense.

Tamika Chesser, 35, appeared in court facing charges of murdering 39-year-old Julian Story and destroying his remains in an attempt to pervert the course of justice. Ms. Chesser, who gained public attention in 2010 as a contestant on the popular television show Beauty and the Geek, has been detained at the James Nash House, a secure forensic mental health facility, since her arrest.

Grim Discoveries in Port Lincoln

The tragic case dates back to June of last year, when emergency services responded to reports of a fire at a residential unit in Port Lincoln, located on South Australia's Eyre Peninsula. Inside the property, authorities discovered the dismembered body of Mr. Story. The investigation took an even more distressing turn in July, when a member of the public discovered Mr. Story's head in scrubland east of the town. Forensic testing confirmed the identity of the remains in September.

Mental Competence Under Investigation

During the court proceedings, Ms. Chesser's defense counsel revealed that investigations are actively underway to assess the 35-year-old's mental competence at the time of the alleged offense. This assessment could form the basis of a formal mental health defense as the case progresses.

Following her not guilty pleas, the magistrate committed Ms. Chesser to stand trial. She is scheduled to appear in the Supreme Court for arraignment later this year, where a trial date is expected to be set.
