Whyalla Football League apologises for 'insensitive' Sydney Swans scandal comments

A recent awards night for the Whyalla Football League has sparked controversy after the master of ceremonies made light-hearted comments about the Sydney Swans scandal.

The MC, Jock Sleep, suggested that a local club "manufacture a good old-fashioned scandal just to get that team going", implying that the same had worked for the Swans. The league has since distanced itself from the comments, describing them as "insensitive" and "unacceptable".

In a statement, Whyalla Football League president Keith Sichler said Sleep's comments were "clearly insensitive and not indicative of current attitudes." However, he also noted that "in his defence", Sleep was attempting "to show how certain events can galvanise a team's resolve with the intent of improving their performance. Nothing more".

Sichler added that the league has spoken with Sleep, and he has expressed regret for any harm caused. "References of this nature are unacceptable and inconsistent with the inclusive and respectful environment we expect across our League," Sichler said.

The comments were strongly condemned by Australian Femicide Watch's Sherele Moody, who shared a video of the incident on social media and described the comments as "terrible". "The crowd at the awards night laughed along with him. There was no attempt to shut down the conversation by the organisers," she wrote.

The incident has sparked a wider conversation about the importance of respectful and inclusive language in community events.
