Dramatic River Torrens Rescue: Police Save 22-Year-Old Man
A 22-year-old man was rescued by police officers after jumping into the River Torrens to evade capture following a fight on Hindley Street in Adelaide's CBD early on Saturday morning. The man was taken to hospital in a non-life-threatening condition after the dramatic rescue.
A dramatic rescue took place on the River Torrens early on Saturday morning, as police officers saved a 22-year-old man from drowning. The man had jumped into the river to evade capture after a fight broke out on Hindley Street in the Adelaide CBD.
The incident began at around 5am, when a group of men were involved in a fight on Hindley Street. When police patrols arrived, one of the men took off, and officers gave chase. Although they briefly lost sight of the 22-year-old, police-monitored cameras later showed him leaping into the River Torrens.
Responding police found the man struggling in the water and calling for help. Without hesitation, three officers jumped into the river, holding him above water until other patrols could pull them to safety.
The 22-year-old, from Blair Athol, was taken to hospital in a non-life-threatening condition. The officers involved in the rescue were assessed by paramedics at the scene.
Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fight, and the events that led to the man's attempt to evade capture.
