AFL News: Bailey Re-Signs with Lions, Liberatore Retires
Brisbane Lions star Zac Bailey has re-signed with the club on an eight-year deal, while Western Bulldogs premiership hero Tom Liberatore has announced his retirement. The news comes as the AFL trade period approaches, with several high-profile players seeking moves.
Zac Bailey has re-signed with the Brisbane Lions, ending speculation about his future with the club. The 26-year-old, who played a key role in the Lions' premiership win last season, has penned an eight-year deal to remain with the club until the end of 2034.
Bailey Stays with Lions
The restricted free agent was reportedly offered a lucrative deal by Adelaide, but has opted to stay with the Lions. Bailey has enjoyed another strong season, kicking 31 goals and averaging a career-high 21.7 disposals per game. The two-time All-Australian's decision comes as the Lions prepare to farewell star veteran Lachie Neale, who is expected to move to Collingwood during the trade period.
Liberatore Retires
In other AFL news, Western Bulldogs premiership hero Tom Liberatore has announced his retirement. The 34-year-old has played 268 AFL games, including a pivotal role in the Bulldogs' 2016 premiership win. Liberatore has struggled with injury and concussion in recent years, playing just 11 games this season.
"This club and its community have been such a huge part of my life," Liberatore said in a club statement. "I'm so fortunate to have lived out my dream for 16 years, from watching my old man play for the club to being part of a premiership that meant so much to all of our fans and to the western suburbs, it's been a real privilege."
"I still love being here and competing each week but it's time for me to step aside, spend more time with my family and friends and support this great club from the stands. I've built lifelong friendships with many teammates through the years, that's what means the most to me."
"I'm really proud of where the club is going and excited about what the group is capable of moving forward. I'm looking forward to watching on with a beer in hand."
Marshall and Duursma Seek Trades
Meanwhile, Rowan Marshall has demanded a trade from St Kilda, with Geelong and Essendon reported to be interested in the 30-year-old ruckman. Cats coach Chris Scott was tight-lipped on his club's prospects of signing Marshall.
"If I was [interested], I wouldn't tell you," Scott told reporters. "It's an unfortunate situation. I think everyone would like us all to be a bit more open, but I think it's got to the stage now [where] the communication should be driven by the players themselves."
North Melbourne's Zane Duursma has also requested a trade to Melbourne, with the Demons long linked to the 21-year-old. The news comes as the trade period approaches, with St Kilda stating it will consider its options regarding Marshall's future.
