An 18-year-old man accused of abducting a child in Adelaide's northern suburbs earlier this month has been granted home detention bail.

Barry-Peter Smith, who allegedly picked up a young girl and carried her a short distance before putting her down, was released on strict conditions and $1,000 bond.

Conditions of bail

Smith's parents were listed as guarantors as he was given bail in Elizabeth Magistrates Court today.

He is accused of picking up a seven-year-old girl who was walking with her grandparents and carrying her a short distance before putting her down.

Smith was arrested the day after the incident, which allegedly occurred on Niven Drive at Paralowie on October 5.

Magistrate Edward Stratton-Smith said the charge of abducting a child was "pretty concerning", but that strict home detention, guarantors and additional terms seemed to be "sufficient" reasons to grant bail.

He stipulated that Smith not contact or engage in work with children, not go within 100 metres of kindergartens or playgrounds, and not contact the victim or the child's grandparents.

The accused's mother and father agreed to a $1,000 surety when asked whether they would be guarantors.

Smith, who appeared via video link, had strong support in court, with about half a dozen family members in attendance.

He will face court again in January.

Police appeal for witnesses

Earlier this week police called for witnesses to the alleged incident to come forward.

"Investigators are now hoping to speak with a woman who witnessed the incident and assisted the victim and her family immediately afterwards," police said in a statement.
